Tiruvarur: The state Government has enhanced the fund allotment for health department manifold over a period of years to provide health care to all, said M. Karunanidhi, Chief Minister at the inauguration of the new Government Medical College at Tiruvarur. The college has come up at a cost of Rs. 100 crores. The Chief Minister stated that the funds allotted by the previous government for health in the year 2005-06 was only Rs. 1,487 crores whereas the funds allotted by the DMK Government for the current year 2010-11 itself was Rs. 3889.41 crores. Among the various health schemes implemented by the state government, the 108 ambulance service and Kalaignar's Insurance scheme for life saving treatment remain the most useful and most popular schemes. In the counselling process, all government college seats were filled, including 85 each at Villupuram and Tiruvarur.
