TIRUVARUR: The Government Medical College at Tiruvarur will start functioning from March 2010, said Health Minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam here on Wednesday.
He inspected the construction works for the college along with Dairy Development Minister U.Mathivanan and Health Secretary V. K. Subburaj.
Mr. Panneerselvam later told presspersons that the period of construction of the college was 18 months. But in nine months time itself, 75 per cent of the work has been completed. The 300-bed hospital building will be completed in 15 days. Hostel and college buildings will be completed in February. The college will start functioning from March, 2010. Already appointment orders have been issued to nearly 1,000 teaching and non-teaching staff of the college.
Five new medical colleges were announced by the Government after it came to power in 2006. Of them, Dharmapuri Government medical college has started functioning. Coming March, Tiruvarur and Villupuram colleges will start functioning. Two more colleges will come up at Perambalur and Sivaganga, the Minister said.
